“Every Year Again” Featured

Written by Thomas Lieth
I wish you a heartwarming Christmas season, and the blessing of our faithful God and Lord Jesus Christ, who left the glory in order to save you and me!

EN16 12 1This is the title of a well-known German Christmas song, and it begins with the words: “Every year again comes the Christ Child down to earth….” One is reminded of this “helpless” Christ Child in the arms of the “Mother of God.”

I would not like this column to go along with the theme of the Christ Child returning every year, but to proclaim the God who became man once and for all, Jesus Christ. It is breathtaking that the Lord Jesus, “…being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:6-7).

I do not know how you feel when you really think about what we celebrate at Christmas, or what we should remember about those days. God became man—that is what one should let melt on one’s tongue—and this news is truly more delicious than any Christmas feast. If one is also aware that God did not just leave the glory for a brief moment, to give us the best of news from our Heavenly Father, but with the cross already in mind, we find no words to completely define this overpowering event.

With speechlessness one may ask, “Why did God do this?” The answer is simple, “For God so loved the world!” Yes, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

Oh yes, more delicious than any Christmas dinner and more precious than any costly gift, because the Christmas story is not just a beautiful story, but the visible intervention of God in the world—and the history of salvation. When over 2,000 years ago in Israel—and especially in the rest of the world—no one really took notice of this birth, something breathtaking happened, something which shook up heaven and earth: “For, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11).

This Child had not simply seen the light of the world; no, this Jesus is the Light of the world, “…the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9). What a message and what joy, if we are able to know, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

In this certainty, I wish you and your whole family great joy, but also the time and rest to say thanks to God. I wish you a heartwarming Christmas season, and the blessing of our faithful God and Lord Jesus Christ, who left the glory in order to save you and me!

AFI We, as Bible-believing Christians, voice our comfort and support for Israel and Jerusalem, because of the promises God has pronounced over that city, the land of Israel and the Jewish people. That is the message we continue to proclaim to whoever has an ear to hear, and that is what we testify to Israel.
