Economic Devastation from Coronavirus

André and Ingrid Beitze, Guatemala

Economically, the coronavirus pandemic hit Guatemala just as hard as many other countries. The restrictions were very severe, not even letting people drive between provinces without a special permit. Public transport is now slowly coming back again.

A married couple recently told us, “It cost us a lot to get to you from our town; you can’t even imagine.” The two of them took two big sacks full of tracts with them, because they didn’t know when they’d be able to return. During this time, many families lost their livelihoods, and people (mostly mothers with children) stand here and there flying white flags to symbolize that they are destitute.
