Frozen Solid, Immortal, and Thawed Again—The Illusion Continues!

Waiting for better times? An analysis of so-called cryonics.

Recently, there have been more and more magazine articles and YouTube videos by cryonics advocates. In relevant videos on the subject, they opine that cryonics offers the possibility of protecting one’s body from decay after death, and transporting it into a future with completely new medical possibilities.

The researchers are mostly scientists or visionaries who want to fight against death, because they can’t accept the natural fact that we humans have to die. This leads to bold statements like, “...We are taking action to fight death and achieve indefinite extension of our own lives.” This statement appears in an article on the Alcor Life Extension Foundation’s website.

In an article published in Switzerland, molecular biologist Patrick Burgermeister says, “That we have to die is one of the most brutal thoughts ever. To know that one day it’s finished, forever, makes some seek refuge in religion and others simply suppress the thought.”

Neither suppressing the thought of death nor seeking refuge in religion is the solution. But, we won’t get anywhere by storing people frozen in a tank, in the hopes of eventually reviving them, either. This effort is not only absurd, but also would be unjust. It’s a typical human desire to be able to simply escape responsibility for our actions in life after our death. In other words, without having to give an account of what we’ve done.

Since time immemorial, God’s Word, the Bible, has shown and clearly taught that we humans must die. Just as clearly, it tells us why. “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Rom 5:12, ESV). And, it says in Romans 6:23 that “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Both Bible verses go back to the account of creation found in Genesis, and reinforce the soundness of these words from then onward. Man must die because he is a fallen, lost sinner. There’s no whitewashing it. Since the Fall of Man thousands of years ago, we prove every day, in all peoples and nations, that the Word of God is correct.

Especially in this day and age, much of the world is out of control, in all areas and in all social classes. The particulars need not be mentioned in detail here. This happens on a daily basis, by means of communication such as print and electronic media. It’s possible for these to delight the world with things both pleasant and unpleasant, or even stir it up. Politics emphasizes peace and human rights, while at the same time countries are arming themselves to the teeth…despite mutual promises not to. Thousands of people are fleeing and have to leave their run-down homelands, mostly due to mismanagement and corruption, violence and persecution. But the nations’ ruling elite is becoming richer and more ruthless. If development aid is needed, “others” are expected to provide it. No one is there to remind those responsible of their duty. Even in more advanced countries with booming economies, there’s no curbing the appetite for even greater profits, although this leads to many jobs being lost or rationalized away. Finally, I should also mention that decency and morality are declining in all classes of society.

Let’s return to the subject of “fighting death” in order to live forever. We should note the following: Genesis 2:7 says, “…the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” This creates a problem if you intend to freeze a person after his death: if a man is truly dead, his soul is gone. But the soul isn’t dead; it lives. There is an impressive biblical passage in the Gospel of Matthew: “And do not fear those who kill [or want to manipulate] the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him [God] who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt 10:28).

What remains in a coffin is skin and bones; in an urn, ashes. But the things that once constituted the deceased person are mind, soul, and body. So, the thing that is frozen and thawed again is mindless, soulless matter. And science and humanity are expecting a better world from these soulless, thawed bodies that don’t even deserve the designation “human”? A world in which it is truly worthwhile to live forever? A beautiful new peaceful world, even though we haven’t ever managed to get along thus far? As Jesus Christ says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).

Cryonics want to fight death and achieve eternal life. This possibility already exists! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The way to get there is through recognition of sin, confession of sin, repentance, and turning to Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of our soul and the world.
