AUSTRIA - Holocaust Survivor Payments Increase

Arno Froese

The decision, which will affect an estimated 2,500 survivors living worldwide, followed extensive deliberations between the Conference for Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and the Austrian Ministry of Finance. The total payout equals 12.5 million euros (about $13.23 million), and survivors who are determined to have special needs will be eligible for a second payment of about the same amount this year, along with additional annual payments.

The organization made clear that this decision was made well before the start of the Israel-Hamas war and is not linked timing-wise to the conflict.

Before World War II, Austria was home to about 192,000 Jews, according to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. By 1939, about 135,000 Jews had fled Austria, which in 1938 was annexed by Nazi Germany. Approximately 65,000 Jews of Austrian origin were murdered in the Holocaust.

In addition to the new payments, the Austrian Holocaust Survivors Emergency Assistance Program has been doubled to 3 million euros for 2024. The funds are distributed via social welfare agencies to eligible Austrian survivors in the form of emergency grants to cover medical needs, eviction prevention and other urgent short-term expenses., 3 November 2023

Arno's Commentary

A number of reputable organizations such as the Claims Conference, have done a remarkably thorough search to determine the value of lost property, not to mention lives, during the Holocaust years. What seems strange is that it took 79 years. Soon there will be no Holocaust survivors left.

What we know with full assurance is that God’s heavenly records are precise and eternal. This will not only affect Austria or Germany, but also the entire world.

The United States has done a remarkable job, which goes back to the beginning: George Washington declared, “May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.” Today, the USA is called home by over 6 million Jews. However, we must add: The real thing is yet to come. Ezekiel 34:25 declares: “And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.”
