CHINA - New Fully Militarized Isles

Arno Froese

China has fully militarized at least three of several islands it built in the disputed South China Sea, arming them with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile systems, laser and jamming equipment, and fighter jets in an increasingly aggressive move that threatens all nations operating nearby, a top U.S. military commander said.

Aquilino spoke with the AP onboard a U.S. Navy reconnaissance aircraft that flew near Chinese-held outposts in the South China Sea’s Spratly archipelago, one of the most hotly contested regions in the world. During the patrol, the P-8A Poseidon plane was repeatedly warned by Chinese callers that it illegally entered what they said was China’s territory and ordered the plane to move away.

“China has sovereignty over the Spratly islands, as well as surrounding maritime areas. Stay away immediately to avoid misjudgment,” one of the stern radio messages said in a veiled threat.

China routinely objects to any action by the U.S. military in the region. The other parties—the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei—claim all or part of the sea, through which approximately $5 trillion in goods are shipped every year.

A U.N.-backed arbitration tribunal that handled the case invalidated China’s sweeping historical claims in the South China Sea under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Beijing dismissed the ruling as sham and continues to defy it.

Washington’s main objective in the disputed region is “to prevent war” through deterrence and promote peace and stability, including by engaging American allies and partners in projects with that objective, Aquilino said., 21 March 2022

Arno's Commentary

China’s claim to territorial sovereignty over much of the South China Sea, is strongly disputed not only by the United States, but also by neighboring countries Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, and the Philippines. What will be the outcome? Time will tell. But we think that war is most unlikely, due to the need for free movement of an immense volume of merchandise—as the article says, $5 trillion—through these disputed areas.

However, the advantage of China is clear because of their twofold might: economic and military.

Although war in most cases is unpredictable, as we have seen with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is not impossible, because we are still living in the times of the Gentiles.

Speaking of the times of the Gentiles, the Bible reminds us in Luke 21:24: “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” When will that be? When the last one has been added to the Church. When the spiritual habitation of God in His Church is perfected, then the light will go out and total chaos globally will be the result—the Great Tribulation.
