CHINA - Sanctions Against Raytheon and Lockheed

Arno Froese

China said it will impose new sanctions on U.S. defense contractors Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin due to their arms sales to Taiwan, stepping up a feud with Washington over security and Beijing’s strategic ambitions.

“China once again urges the U.S. government and relevant parties to … stop arms sales to Taiwan and sever military ties with Taiwan,” Wang said.

“China will continue to take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty and security interests in accordance with the development of the situation,” he said without giving any details.

The U.S. has no formal relations with Taiwan but is its main ally. It has increased weapons sales in recent years, angering China with the sales. U.S. law requires the government to ensure Taiwan can defend itself.

China maintains that U.S. arms sale to Taiwan violates its so-called “one-China principle” and provisions of agreements between Beijing and Washington.

Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and other defense industry giants face controls on sales to China of military and dual-use technologies that have both defense and commercial applications. But they also have major civilian businesses and China is a huge market for aviation, among other industries.

Arno's Commentary

Sanctions and counter-sanctions are the modern tools of warfare. There would be no advantage for China to attack the USA or vice-versa, but sanctions, at least to a certain degree, do hurt. However, some experts argue that in the end they are useless, because loopholes are always found and successfully exploited.

When we ask, what are all these weapons for, we get the answer from Joel 3:9-10: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.”

War, we have to admit, is one of the greatest contributors toward the amazing developments of technology. One nation wants to out-do the other. That’s what has happened in the past, is happening presently, and will continue to happen in the foreseeable future. Where did it all begin? Genesis 4:8 reports: “And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.” This apparently wasn’t due to politics but religion. About Cain, we read in the New Testament: “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous” (1 John 3:12).

Regarding weapons, they will be abolished one day. “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4).
