CHINA - Successful Missile Interceptor Test

Arno Froese

Anti-ballistic missile systems are meant to shield a country from potential attacks by using projectiles to intercept incoming missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Some analysts liken it to shooting down a bullet with another bullet.

This marks China’s sixth known test of a land-based anti-ballistic missile, according to state-run tabloid Global Times. The country has been conducting such tests since 2010, typically holding them every few years.

The test comes amid rising tensions in the region, with a recent spate of missile tests from North Korea including short-range ballistic missiles and a presumed ICBM.

“China just cannot let itself lag behind in this important area of military technological competition,” said Tong Zhao, senior fellow in the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “China is looking at other major powers. US is the primary concern, but Russia is also developing increasingly capable missile defense technologies.”

Earlier, China criticized the United States for deploying medium-range ballistic missiles in the Asia Pacific region, saying it made a “gravely negative impact” on international arms control., 20 June 2022

Arno's Commentary

There is no clear path to effectively implementing international arms control. What Jesus prophesied, “ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars,” continues to be true until today.

The prophet Joel makes this statement: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong” (Joel 3:9-10). What is the advice of our Lord? “But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by” (Luke 21:9).

When we ask why there are conflicts among the nations, we must look to Israel. The nation was proclaimed in 1948, with limited territory. But we know that much of Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan is Arab-occupied Israeli territory. Yet the prophet Joel speaks of “all nations” being judged. The reason? Because they “parted my land.”
