CHINA - Three Decades Away from Superpower Number One

Arno Froese

Beijing has outlined plans to become the world’s biggest superpower within the next 30 years.

Opening a five-yearly national congress, Chinese President Xi Jinping set out his time frame for the country to become a “global leader” with international influence.

In his 3 ½ hour speech, Mr. Xi urged a reinvigorated Communist Party to take a stronger role in society and economic development to better address the nation’s “grim” challenges.

He said “it was time for his nation to transform itself into a mighty force” that could lead the entire world on political, economic, military and environmental issues, The Guardian reported.

Hailing the start of a “new era,” Mr. Xi outlined a vision in which the party would lead China on the road to becoming a “great modern socialist country” by the mid-century.

Dr. Malcom Davis said Beijing wanted to replace the US as the world’s dominant superpower, an idea many people have dismissed as absurd as recently as a few years ago.

Dr. Davis pointed out Beijing was a major maritime power which the US was aware of and one which was determined to assert its dominance, particularly in the South China Sea.

He said China was also trying to make other countries sign up to its One Belt, One Road infrastructure investment project.

By doing this Beijing was extending its influence over other countries which would align themselves more with China than the US.

Dr. Davis said China’s plans had a direct impact on Australia.

“Australia was just a backwater [country] when [the] Cold War was taking place, now we are right in the frontline” he said.

“The South China Sea is not far away and China is extending its reach into the Indian Ocean as well.”, 20 October 2017

Arno's commentary

Only time will tell if these political predictions by communist China will become true or not. Looking back just a few decades, communist China was a backwater nation with no great potential. Today, China is the world’s largest passenger vehicle market; they are now the world’s largest exporter, they file more patents than anyone else in the world, and show no signs of regression at this time. There is little to no doubt, in the minds of experts, that China will be the world’s largest economy in the not-too-distant future.

What’s it all about? We reiterate: the world will become one. Thus, equality of the nations of the world is but natural. Nevertheless, one day everything will come crashing down. That will cause the greatest and only global depression. It will actually spell the end of the world.

What is the Christian’s response toward this development? The apostle Peter answers: “Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13).
