EU - Amazon Hit with Record Privacy Fine

Arno Froese

Amazon.com Inc. has been fined 746 million euros, equivalent to $887 million, by a European Union privacy regulator for violations related to its advertising, by far the largest-ever fine under the EU’s data-protection law.

Amazon said the regulator’s decision was without merit and that it would appeal in court. “The decision relating to how we show customers relevant advertising relies on subjective and untested interpretations of European privacy law, and the proposed fine is entirely out of proportion with even that interpretation,” the company said.

The Wall Street Journal in early June reported that Luxembourg’s privacy regulator, the CNPD, had circulated a draft decision sanctioning Amazon’s privacy practices and proposing a fine of more than $425 million to the EU’s 26 other national data-protection authorities.

The record fine is a sign that EU privacy regulators are taking a more aggressive stance on enforcement, some three years after the EU’s privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation, went into effect.

So far, the largest fine under the GDPR was a €50 million fine against Google in 2019.

Luxembourg’s fine would represent roughly 4.2% of Amazon’s reported net income of $21.3 billion for 2020, and 0.2% of its $386 billion in sales. Under the GDPR, regulators can fine up to 4% of a company’s annual revenue.

Arno's Commentary

We have entered an era unprecedented in history. In olden days, when one country disagreed with another and diplomacy failed, war was the result—no longer today. To do business in Europe, everyone has to adhere to the strict privacy law (GDPR). America’s liberal laws are not applicable in the EU. Amazon responded by saying it is “subjective and untested interpretation of European privacy law.” That’s very true, but the law is still the law.

What does it mean from Biblical perspectives? We repeat: the implementation of true globalism. Why? Because the god of this world, who rules all the nations, is attempting to create a perfect, peaceful, prosperous, and secure global society. Needless to say, that is a copy of the Church of Jesus Christ. We do not have a court or written law based on human precepts. We do not have a country, a capital city, or some imposing headquarters. We are directly responsible to the King of kings and Lord of lords, of whom it is written in Revelation 19:15: “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

The original church in Jerusalem demonstrated perfect unity. When Peter and Paul were forbidden to preach in the name of Jesus, we read in Acts 4:24: “And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is.” Note the words “one accord”—that is a perfect union.

May we as individual believers, learn how the events taking place today, correspond to what was recorded for us about 2,000 years ago. We are one, whether in Africa, Asia, Europe, or America; we are the spiritual house of God on earth, as 1 Peter 2:5 records, “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”
