EUROPE - Leaders Call for EU Army

Arno Froese

German Chancellor Angela Merkel endorsed the creation of an EU army, siding with French President Emmanuel Macron whose similar call drew a fusillade of wrathful tweets from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Merkel threw her support behind the idea in an address to the European Parliament, part of a series of leaders’ speeches on the future of Europe.

“Jean-Claude Juncker already said that a common European army would show the world that there would never again be war in Europe,” Merkel said, referring to the European Commission president, who was in the Parliament chamber.

“The times when we could rely on others are over,” Merkel said. “This means nothing less than for us Europeans to take our destiny in our own hands if we want to survive as a Union. This means, in the long run, Europe has to become more capable to act. We have to reconsider our ways of deciding and to renounce the principle of unanimity where the European treaties allow and wherever this is necessary. I proposed a European security council, in which important decisions can be prepared faster.”

“We have to create a European intervention unit with which Europe can act on the ground where necessary,” Merkel continued. “We have taken major steps in the field of military cooperation, this is good and largely supported in this house. But I also have to say, seeing the developments of the recent years, that we have to work on a vision to establish a real European army one day.”

In her speech at the European Parliament, Merkel repeatedly stressed European values. “Tolerance is the soul of Europe, it is an indispensable basic value for us Europeans,” she said.

“Solidarity is a component of the European treaties,” Merkel said. “It is a central feature of our values.”, 14 November 2018

Arno's commentary

To create a truly European armed forces would be a gigantic task, which at this time seems all but impossible.

Other voices insist that armed forces of each country should work independently; the reason being that, in most cases, an armed force is relatively unnecessary in these modern days.

What is Europe’s future? War between the nations is virtually out of the question, because of their almost fully integrated economic and financial system. But the war machines of the world’s nations continue to increase, as proclaimed by the prophet Joel: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong” (Joel 3:9-10). This has been historically true until this very day. Yet commercialism and merchandising will be the ultimate king, as reported in Revelation: “For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies” (Revelation 18:3).

Today, Europe is the safest, richest, and most secure continent. That, we believe—based on the prophetic Word—will continue until Europe is the only model left for the rest of the world to pattern after. Europe’s motto, “United in diversity,” will become a reality even more, as proclaimed in Revelation 17:13: “These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.”
