GERMANY - ‘United State of Europe’ by 2025

Martin Schulz, the leader of Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) urged his fellow members to enter into coalition talks with chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives to form a grand coalition.

Schulz, the former president of the European Parliament, urged his party to push for the creation of a “United States of Europe” by 2025.

The SPD party congress will decide whether the Social Democrats will join forces with Merkel once again, despite fears that the party would not be able to revive itself in the embrace of the Christian Democrats.

“Europe does not always work for its people, rather too often for the big companies,” Schulz said.

“The question isn’t grand coalition or no grand coalition. Nor minority government or fresh elections. No—it’s about how we exercise our responsibility, including to the next generation, Schulz was quoted by Reuters.

“I want a European constitutional treaty that creates a federal Europe,” he said.

Schulz argued that only a reinforced EU could act as a bulwark to right-wing nationalists, who have made gains in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France and the Netherlands recently., 7 December 2017

Arno's commentary

To create the “United States of Europe” seems like it would be next to impossible. One must keep in mind that Europe has over 2,000 years of documented history. There isn’t a country in Europe where the citizens do not complain that part of their boundaries were shifted during this or that war 100, 500, or 1,000 years ago. Nevertheless, when one looks at Europe today, it is the most prosperous, peaceful, and securest continent on earth. Less than 80 years ago, the continent was in turmoil: killing and being killed, destroying and being destroyed. The climax of this destruction was in the First and Second World Wars, but war among the small kingdoms and even city-states was a reality for thousands of years.

There is another item to consider. Europe conquered the entire planet; the colonial powers of Europe discovered, settled and established 35 different sovereign nations on the American continent (North and South). Australia was established by Europeans. Only in the late 1960s were people from Africa and Asia allowed to immigrate. When looking at Africa as well as Asia, both continents were—to a large extent—divided between the colonial powers, and borders established according to the pleasure of the European power structures. Therefore, to create a more solidified bloc (U.S.E.) is not far-fetched; as the present political-economic reality shows, it is working rather well.

While the United States was a model for Europe to follow, Europe is now becoming a model for the world: to create unity through prosperity among extremely diverse groups of people. One must keep the end result in mind: there will be one world, one government and one god: the god of this world.
