GERMANY - Gospel Power in East Germany

Arno Froese

“The swan song of evangelization is nonsense,” says Evangelist Theo Lehmann, as he criticizes increasing self-reflection.

The time of huge evangelization events isn’t over. If they are designed to be contemporary, they’re still met with great interest today. This conviction was expressed by evangelist and pastor Theo Lehmann (of Chemnitz, Germany) in the magazine Aufbruch (“Awakening”). “I’ve been hearing this nonsense for 50 years now, especially from those who fundamentally reject evangelism.” He and other evangelists have never lacked for work or invitations: “If you get it right and stay with the biblical message, you won’t have spare time on your hands.” It is even “one of the best ways to bring the message of Jesus among the people.”

Lehmann also commented on the success of his church services in Chemnitz (then Karl-Marx-Stadt) during the GDR [German Democratic Republic of East Germany] era. He was delighted with the roughly 3,000 visitors.

Arno's commentary

Brother Lehmann testifies of about 3,000 visitors to his church during the communist regime. How did he get away with it? Simply proclaiming the biblical message of Jesus Christ as the Savior. That, apparently, was not illegal. The Church has no borders, no language barriers, no government law that can hinder the work of God the Holy Spirit. Here we are reminded of the words in 1 John 4:4: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” That is the Church, which is being built all over the world, despite frequent opposition from Islam, Hinduism, communism, socialism, and capitalism. The real Church is victorious, for the victory has already been achieved by Jesus Christ the Lord on Calvary’s Cross, when He exclaimed: “It is finished.”
