INDIA - Opens Agricultural Research Institute with Israel

Qualified students in India will soon be able to earn a degree from Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev in dryland agriculture and biotechnology, hydrology and water quality, desert studies, or ecology and conservation.

“Through this partnership with Aban, we are looking forward to being able to offer the vast knowledge and experience we develop here to students in India … so that they will be able to have an impact in their home country,” said Prof. Noam Weisbrod, director of the Israeli university’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research.

“This new generation of local scholars will receive the tools to tackle some of the most pressing concerns of the modern world: the need for efficient and modern agriculture to optimize and improve food production and the methods and technologies to increase and improve water availability and quality, all while keeping in mind the environmental concerns,” Weisbrod said.

BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz noted, “We are proud to be leading global research in these fields and therefore it is natural for Ben-Gurion University of the Negev to direct the academic establishment of an agriculture institute in India. The students will benefit from studies at BGU at our Sde Boker Campus, and then carry out relevant research in the new institute under the mentorship of BGU scientists.”, 22 November 2020

Arno's commentary

Israel has become a major exporter of fresh produce and is a world leader in agricultural science and technology, despite the fact it is a semi-desert.

Israel21c lists twelve ways Israel is helping feed the world:

1. Drip irrigation
2. More grain to the market
3. Saving mangos from fruit fly devastation
4. Precision agriculture
5. Saving strawberries and much more
6. Squeezing every drop of water from the air
7. Dairy farming
8. Raising fish
9. Hardier seed for more and better crops
10. Packaging that extends shelf life
11. Alternative protein
12. Moshav, the organization teaching people how to grow more [with less water] and [create] better food

Moses passes on the words of God: “Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely” (Leviticus 26:4-5). However, the condition was, “If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them” (verse 3). Israel did experience the fulfillment of that promise, but in later years, disobedience and rebellion against God’s commandments caused their land to be desolate and empty. In these last days, however, the land is being revived with Jewish ingenuity. Yet, verse 12 is to be fulfilled in the future: “And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.”
