IRAN - Military Battles Locust Invasion

Mohammad Reza Mir, a spokesman for the ministry’s Plant Protection Organization (PPO), said the desert locusts had attacked more than 200,000 hectares of orchards and farmland in seven of Iran’s 31 provinces, the semi-official news agency ILNA reported.

The affected areas, stretching from eastern Iran on the border with Pakistan to the south-western border with Iraq, were likely to soon increase to 1 million hectares, Mr. Mir told ILNA.

“The military have promised to help fight the desert locusts, including by providing all-terrain vehicles for use in areas which are hard to access,” Mir told ILNA.

PPO’s head, Mohammad Reza Dargahi, said that locust swarms threatened billions of dollars’ worth of agricultural products across six provinces in southern Iran, the daily Financial Tribune reported.

The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates agricultural losses to neighboring Pakistan from locusts could be as high as $3.4 billion for winter crops alone.

This year’s swarms are expected to be much larger than in 2019, because their numbers increase on average 20-fold with each generation., 15 May 2020

Arno's Commentary

Locusts remind us of the eighth plague God sent upon Egypt, because Pharaoh refused to let the people of Israel go. Exodus 10:14-15 reads: “And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.”

Today’s locust plague hits Iran especially hard. That country is one of the most bitter enemies of Israel and has publicly declared its wish to wipe Israel off the map. That, of course, is not going to happen, because Israel’s existence is based on the existence of the universe. That’s one thing; the other is, Israel is probably the best country when it comes to fighting locusts or, for that matter, any other plague. Maybe Iran will wake up, because the ninth plague upon Egypt was total darkness.
