ISRAEL - 500,000 Israelis Living in West Bank

Arno Froese

The West Bank’s Israeli settler population now makes up more than half a million people, crossing a major threshold, a pro-settler group.

“We’ve reached a huge hallmark,” said Baruch Gordon, the director of the group and a resident of the Beit El settlement. “We’re here to stay.”

“I think that in the coming years of this government there will be more building than there has been in the last 20 years of governments,” Gordon said.

Settlements have flourished under most Israeli governments, including at the height of the peace process in the 1990s. Even the short-lived previous government, which included parties supporting Palestinian statehood along with those opposing it, continued to expand settlements.

Israel says the West Bank is disputed territory, rather than occupied, saying the latter terminology denies the Jewish people’s historical presence in the land. It argues that the fate of settlements should be part of negotiations to bring about an end to the conflict.

The settlers and their many supporters in government view the West Bank as the biblical and historical heartland of the Jewish people and are opposed to any partition., 2 February 2023

Arno's Commentary

Readers will notice that we rarely use the term “settlers” when Jews develop part of their land. Settlers are those who by unjustified means have destroyed or displaced the original inhabitants of a land. Such is the case with the 35 sovereign nations established on the American continent (North and South).

While it is not our intention to get geopolitically involved or pinpoint various nations that have changed their borders, there is ample evidence that borders were established with weapons of war.

How different Israel is! Virtually the entire world opposes Jews establishing towns and villages, with roads, farms, schools, synagogues, and functioning democratic local government, calling “…the establishment of Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories illegal on one of two bases: that they are in violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, or that they are in breach of international declarations. The United Nations Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly…”

When searching “changes in international borders,” Wikipedia literally lists hundreds of nations that have done so, namely in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and America. It was done forcefully.

Interestingly, not one single nation on the face of the earth agrees with God’s covenant with Abraham: “In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates” (Genesis 15:18).
