ISRAEL - 600% Gun License Increase

Arno Froese

Israel has seen a 600% increase in applications for a gun license following the wave of terror the state faced, which killed 21 civilians in multiple acts of terror, according to data revealed at a discussion of the Firearms Licensing Committee of the Public Security Ministry.

“Everyone who serves in the reserve should be allowed to receive weapons in civilian life as well,” said Likud MK Nir Barkat. “We need 200,000 fighters to help the police protect their neighborhoods and families in the next state of emergency when attacked on several fronts. With the current system we will not reach these numbers because it cannot provide an answer.”

Meanwhile, during the committee meeting, Firearms Division head Israel Avishar revealed that at the moment, 151,015 private firearms are currently in the possession of 141,646 authorized civilians.

While prior to the terror wave, Israel saw 600 requests for a private firearms license on average per month, according to division member Chen Cohen, following the wave of terror, Israel saw an average of 600 requests per day.

Arno's Commentary

If any country can claim exceptionalism, it is Israel and Israel alone.

Military service is compulsory; subsequently, firearms are to be found in every home. However, soldiers on active duty or in reserve are strictly forbidden to use government-issued firearms privately. To obtain a private firearm license is relatively difficult. An applicant must know Hebrew, have completed military service, and be at least 21 years of age. Citizens who have not completed military service must be at least 27 years old.

The Small Arms Survey from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Study in Geneva, Switzerland, shows the following:

Country    Firearm casualties    Firearm possession per 100
USA             12.21                            120.50
Israel              2.09                                6.70
UK                 0.23                                3.44

Apparently, more firearms results in more bodies.

What needs to be emphasized is that Israel is officially at war with a number of Arab countries and is not recognized as a nation by the majority of Islamic states. Yet, statistics from various sources show that Israel is one of the safest countries in the world. That is nothing short of miraculous.

The ultimate protection for Christians is the Lord; following Him is total security. Jesus said: “Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword” (Matthew 26:52).
