Arno Froese

This year, a record eight of [TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2023] are Israeli:

• Beewise’s AI-powered BeeHome 4, a hive that uses a new chemical-free heat treatment to fight off mites.
• Brenmiller Energy’s bGen Zero, a battery charged by solar or wind energy.
• Lumen, a handheld device that measures carbon dioxide levels in the breath to determine whether the body is burning more fat or carbs at any given time.
• Salignostics’ Salistick, the world’s first home pregnancy test using saliva instead of urine.
• UBQ Materials’ bio-based sustainable thermoplastic made by sorting, shredding and melting down residual household waste into fibers.
• A human embryo model built at Weizmann Institute of Science from naive stem cells.
• Wiliot’s tiny IoT Pixel device, placed on shipment boxes, transmits information about the box’s journey in real time.
• Sensibo got a special mention for AirPro, which turns air conditioners or heat pumps into smart devices that uniquely save energy and improve air quality.

“Every year for over two decades, TIME editors have highlighted the most impactful new products and ideas in TIME’s Best Inventions issue.

“The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions … that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”, 26 October 2023

Arno's Commentary

That Israel is at the forefront is not a surprise. The State of Israel, only 75 years old, has technologically achieved more than any other nation in history. The last sentence seems most significant, emphasizing that the inventions will change “how we live, work, play, and think”—particularly the last word, “think.”

In contrast to all the thinking in the world, Isaiah declares: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts…” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
