ISRAEL - Ancient Cave Discovered

Arno Froese

A 2,000-year-old labyrinth of caves dating to the Roman period discovered beneath the home of a Lower Galilee family was recently plundered by antiquities thieves, the Israel Antiquities Authority said.

During a routine inspection of the caves, the IAA’s Robbery Prevention Unit said the thieves looted several relics and destroyed others.

Following a joint investigation carried out by the IAA, Border Police and Tiberias police, two unidentified residents of the village were detained on suspicion of carrying out illegal excavations.

“It is sad that in the name of making money people destroy and damage antiquities, and prevent the general public from enjoying the national heritage that belongs to all of us,” the Authority added., 18 October 2017

Arno's commentary

Israel’s Antiquities Authority is very thorough and has done an excellent job of documenting Jewish presence throughout the present boundaries of Israel. There is, of course, much more to be discovered in Lebanon and Syria—presently Arab-occupied Israeli territory according to Scripture.

The work of archaeologists must be commended, but they still have much work to do. In Joshua 1:3-4 we read: “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.”
