ISRAEL - First-Ever Artificial Cornea Transplant

Arno Froese

A 78-year old blind man got his sight back with the implant of an artificial cornea, the first such operation in the world.

“The surgical procedure was straightforward, and the result exceeded all of our expectations,” said Prof. Irit Bahar, director of the hospital’s ophthalmology department, who conducted the surgery.

“Unveiling this first implanted eye and being in that room, in that moment, was surreal,” added Dr. Gilad Litvin, the co-founder of CorNeat Vision. “After years of hard work, seeing a colleague implant the CorNeat KPro with ease and witnessing a fellow human being regain his sight the following day was electrifying and emotionally moving; there were a lot of tears in the room.”

The CorNeat KPro implant is designed to replace deformed, scarred or opacified corneas and is expected to fully and immediately rehabilitate the vision of corneally blind patients following a relatively simple implantation procedure. It is the first artificial cornea that completely integrates with the eye wall with no reliance on donor tissue, the company said., 20 January 2021

Arno's Commentary

The fact that this successful transplant occurred in Israel is not surprising. Israel’s medical science is acknowledged and well-respected throughout the world.

Biblically, we are reminded of the Old Testament prophecy, Isaiah 35:5: “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.”

Later in the New Testament, we read of the fulfillment. Jesus tells a blind man, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing” (John 9:7). The Pharisees could not understand this miracle, but the blind man answered: “Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see” (verse 25b).
