ISRAEL - First Waste to Energy Power Plant

Arno Froese

The Finance Ministry and Ministry of Environmental Protection have announced plans to construct Israel’s first waste-to-energy power plant, estimated to cost NIS 1 billion.

An inter-ministerial committee for the treatment of waste, estimated at 5 million tons annually, published a pre-qualification document ahead of the public-private-partnership (PPP) tender to plan, fund, construct and operate the facility.

Incinerating waste to produce electricity, the plant will be built at the “Good Samaritan” recycling park near Ma’aleh Adumim. The plant is expected to serve as the primary waste treatment facility for the Jerusalem metropolitan area and surrounding towns.

According to the ministries, the new site—which is estimated to commence operations in another six years—will be home to an innovative waste sorting facility and the most advanced energy recovery facility worldwide, producing electricity from waste under stringent environmentally-friendly conditions.

The plant is expected to replace the construction of an already-approved landfill at the recycling park, thereby “avoiding significant environmental damage” and contributing toward the Ministry of Environmental Protection’s targeting to reduce the national landfill disposal rate from 80% today to 26% by 2030., 15 October 2019

Arno's commentary

There is no doubt that Israel is the shining star in the Middle East when it comes to technology; in this case, turning garbage into energy. Comparatively, neighboring Arab nations have problems feeding their people. Looking to the south, Egypt is chaotic and can only be held together by military force. In the north is Syria—devastated by the continued seven-year war—and Lebanon’s internal civil conflict sees no end. These neighboring countries are in turmoil, while Israel lives in relative peace. The CIA Factbook lists Israel’s life expectancy at 83 years, with most Arab countries listed in the mid-70s for the year 2017.

Yes, Israel is different, and will be so until the very end. But then the Lord Himself will intervene on behalf of Israel, and through that nation, affect the entire world positively. “Thus saith the Lord of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you” (Zechariah 8:23).
