ISRAEL - Hacking For Hire—Made in Israel

Arno Froese

The firm, which goes by the name Candiru, is part of a burgeoning industry of largely unregulated spyware companies that sell snooping technology to government intelligence services and law enforcement agencies—often with questionable human rights records.

The report comes amid roiling concern about the proliferation of cyberweapons once limited to a handful of nations that are now becoming far more widespread. In addition to helping authoritarian regimes spy on dissidents and adversaries, that growth has enabled a wave of criminal hacks, including ransomware campaigns that have disrupted U.S. oil supplies and meat production.

Microsoft is part of a chorus of large tech firms that are increasingly criticizing the spyware industry and calling on governments to regulate their products through export bans and other measures. As part of its investigation, Microsoft patched major bugs that Candiru used to spy on its users.

The full capabilities of Candiru’s spying tools aren’t clear, but they probably allow users to intercept victims’ communications, steal their data, track their location and spy through microphones and cameras, Scott-Railton said. The tools were effective against both Windows and Mac computers, as well as iPhone and Android smartphones.

The most significant tech response came in 2019, when WhatsApp sued the most prominent spyware company, another Israeli firm called NSO, in U.S. federal court. The Facebook affiliate claimed NSO acted illegally by helping governments hack hundreds of its customers, including journalists, human rights workers and women who had been targeted with online attacks., 15 July 2021

Arno's Commentary

The overwhelming population of the world has little to no idea how corporations, businesses, governments, and criminals are gathering private information heretofore unknown.

This is quite an interesting development, when one analyzes it from a Biblical, prophetic perspective. Technology is literally racing ahead, conquering the world, so every single person on planet earth will have to be included. Technology is king and is developing faster than governments are able to write effective laws to catch up.

We are reminded of the Church of Jesus Christ, a special select group of people dwelling on all continents and in all countries of the world. Yet we are perfectly united as one through God the Holy Spirit. We do not have a country, a government, a headquarters, a capital city, or rules, laws, and regulations apart from the living Word of God—the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. This special group of people are described by the apostle Peter with these words: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). Yes, we are a holy nation, a peculiar people. One day in the not-too-distant future, we look for the day that the Church—representing the habitation of God on earth—will suddenly be snatched away from planet earth. That will be followed by the Great Tribulation.
