ISRAEL - Jerusalem World’s Fastest Growing Tourist Destination

Arno Froese

Jerusalem is the world’s fastest-growing tourism destination, a report by London-based market research company Euromonitor International revealed.

According to the report, incoming tourism to the Israeli capital is set to grow by 38% in 2018, courtesy of “relative stability and a strong marketing push.” Tourism in the city grew by 32% in 2017, the company said.

Although Israeli tourism is thriving, the Middle East and North Africa have witnessed a downturn in tourism, with cities including Jerba and Sousse in Tunisia, and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt dropping out of the top 100 city destinations in recent years “mainly due to terrorist attacks and subsequent slumping demand.” Cairo has bucked the trend, however, by welcoming an 11.5% increase in visitors.

In mid-November, the number of incoming tourists surpassed last year’s record of 3.6 million and the figure now stands at an unprecedented 3.8 million.

“We have achieved the goals we set for ourselves and I believe we will reach four million tourists by the end of the year—an all-time record,” said Tourism Minister Yariv Levin., 6 December 2018

Arno's commentary

In 2006 under IndexMundi, listing international tourism, Israel had only 1.825 million visitors, and was not even listed in the top 50. Thus, 3.8 million visitors is quite impressive. The world’s most popular tourist destination is France, as always, far above any other country in the world with 84.5 million visitors.

Comparing Israel with Switzerland, a country of about the same population (8.5 million) but twice as large—with Israel’s 22,070 square kilometers to Switzerland’s 41,290 square kilometers—Switzerland counts over 20 million visitors.

Nevertheless, we see in this a shadow of prophecy which is yet to be fulfilled. For example, Zechariah 8:22-23: “Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.”
