ISRAEL - Laser Defense System Success

A high-powered laser defense system has for the first time passed a test to intercept drones, missiles and other aerial threats, Israel’s Defense Ministry said.

Israel has accelerated the roll-out of the laser-based interceptor as part of a plan to adopt such technology and reduce the high costs currently incurred by shooting down incoming projectiles.

“The laser is a game-changer thanks to its easily operated system and significant economic advantages,” said Brigadier General Yaniv Rotem from the ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development.

The laser system was able to intercept drones, mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in multiple scenarios, the ministry said. The interceptors would use lasers to super-heat incoming drones or the kinds of rockets favored by Iran-backed guerrillas, officials have said Israel says it is developing airborne laser to down drones previously.

Once operational, Israel plans to deploy the laser interceptors initially in the south, where towns are regularly shelled by Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza., 14 April 2022

Arno's Commentary

To use lasers in the defense system is a still somewhat unknown area. Nevertheless, Israel’s defense ministry believes it will be effective on land, air, and sea in the not-too-distant future.

During the last 11-day Israeli-Gaza war, Hamas militants fired more than 4,000 rockets toward Israel. The Iron Dome defense system claimed 90% success in interception.

What is a laser?

A laser is created when electrons in the atoms in optical materials like glass, crystal, or gas absorb the energy from an electrical current or a light. That extra energy “excites” the electrons enough to move from a lower-energy orbit to a higher-energy orbit around the atom’s nucleus.

Lasers have become part of our everyday lives. The article explains, “You will find them in everything from CD players to dental drills to high-speed metal cutting machines and measuring systems.” Thus, the principal function of lasers is literally part of our day-to-day work. But the laser Israel is developing has more in mind.

The future is now, particularly in view of the Iranian nuclear threat and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Dozens of countries will stand in line to obtain such laser defense systems.

While we are amazed at the developments in technology, we are reminded of the real thing. Judges 5 records the song of victory by Deborah, and we read in verse 20: “They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.” The invisible world is already active for the final event for the Church, the Rapture.
