ISRAEL - The Growing Church

Arno Froese

According to the CBS, around 187,900 Christians live in Israel, composing 1.9% of the population. This represents 1.3% growth from the year before.

The Christian population has been on the rise for at least the last two years. In 2021, the population grew by 1.4% to 182,000, and in 2022, there was about 2% growth to 185,000, according to the CBS.

This contrasts with most countries in the Middle East, where Christian populations are declining, and there is “horrifying growth” of Christian persecution. This is according to the organization Open Doors, which puts out an annual “World Watch List” of where Christians suffer very high or extreme levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.

Among the top 50 countries in which Christians were persecuted in 2023 were Yemen, Libya, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and other Middle Eastern and Muslim-majority countries. Israel was not on the list., 23 December 2023

Arno's Commentary

As born-again believers, we realize that under the label of “Christian,” there is a distinct difference between Christians by religion and Christians by conviction.

Although during past years, various reports insisted that there is persecution of Christians in Israel, the article concludes, “Israel was not on the list” where Christians are persecuted.

What we are seeing in Israel is certainly an end-time sign. It was in the Jewish country, in the city of Jerusalem, where we read of the birth of the Church. Acts 5:14 records: “And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.” The apostle Peter testified in Jerusalem, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). Verse 41 documents the result: “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

It seems that the circle is being closed; it started in Jerusalem, and it will end in Jerusalem. That fact reinforces our hope and prayer. More than ever, come soon Lord Jesus!
