ISRAEL - Weizmann Ranked Eighth Globally for Research

Arno Froese

The Weizmann Institute of Science has been ranked eighth globally for research quality in a ranking published by the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University in the Netherlands.

The institute is one of only two institutions outside the US that made it into the top ten. The other is Shandong University in China which ranked at number ten. The next Israeli university on the ranking is the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, which was number 395, followed by the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa at 454.

Some 20% of papers authored by Weizmann scientists were ranked in the top 10% for scientific impact, and over 20% of papers authored by scientists in Weizmann’s Biomedical and Health Sciences and in Life and Earth sciences were ranked in the top 10% for scientific impact.

Between 2015 and 2018, 263 papers were published on Life and Earth sciences by Weizmann scientists, while 1,084 were on physical sciences and engineering, 919 on biomedical and health sciences, 227 on mathematics and computer science and 65 were on social sciences and humanities., 10 November 2020

Arno's commentary

To be ranked eighth is quite impressive for this small country with a population of under 9 million people. If history has any lessons, it is this: there will be more Israeli scientific and learning institutions that will keep growing in size and stature.

Of course, there are multiple reasons for Israel’s world-class science, most notable being they are a country of immigrants from over 100 different nations. That usually is an indication of the accumulation of successive layers of knowledge rather quickly, which is then turned into practical research followed by startup companies.

Our interest, of course, is Biblical. We know that this nation is destined to be number one.

Jeremiah 33:8-9 has this to say: “And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me. And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.”
