MOROCCO - First Synagogue on University Campus

House of worship at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University near Marrakech built next to new mosque; ‘Morocco is also a Jewish land,’ says head of Muslim-founded organization dedicated to preserving country’s Jewish culture.

The thaw in relations between the Jewish state and countries in the region resumed two years ago with the signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel and Bahrain and the UAE—the first treaty of its kind since Israel and Jordan signed a peace deal in 1994.

The event was attended by Rabbi Elie Abadie, the senior rabbi of the Jewish Council of the Emirates in the UAE; Magda Haroun, the president of the Egyptian Jewish Community; and Jacky Kadoch, the president of the Jewish community of Marrakech-Essaouira. Guests also included representatives from Mimouna Association and other Moroccan Jewish and non-Jewish leaders.

The synagogue is called Beit Allah, “like the House of God,” Mimouna Association founder and president El Mehdi Boudra, told The Media Line.

“Moroccan Judaism is really a part of Moroccan society for 2,000 years. Morocco is also a Jewish land and we celebrate the diversity of Morocco traditionally,” he said.

Arno's Commentary

Wikipedia, under “History of Moroccan Jews,” states: “Moroccan Jews constitute an ancient community. Before the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, there were about 250,000 to 350,000 Jews in the country, which gave Morocco the largest Jewish community in the Muslim world.”

Except for a few thousand, the Jews have all migrated to Israel—to the land they have yearned to return to for thousands of years: “Next year in Jerusalem!”

What this article shows is that Israel continues to receive recognition by previous enemies such as Morocco.

At this point in time, there is little to no doubt that this progression of relationships between Arab countries and Israel will continue.
