PERU - First Person to Die by Euthanasia

A Peruvian psychologist who had an incurable disease that weakened her muscles and left her bedridden for several years died by euthanasia, her lawyer said, becoming the first person in the country to obtain the right to die with medical assistance.

With the help of Peru’s Human Rights Ombudsman, Estrada won a lawsuit that gave her the right to die with euthanasia. From her bed, she participated in court sessions through video conferences.

Only a handful of countries have legalized euthanasia, including Canada, Belgium and Spain. Some U.S. states, including Maine and Oregon, allow physician-assisted suicide, where a doctor provides a terminally ill patient with the means to end their life.

Arno's Commentary

With regard to euthanasia, it becomes more and more difficult for countries that allow it to determine under what circumstances it is to be implemented. However, we outright reject this practice, because the Word of God tells us that only God gives and takes lives.

When it comes to modern medical science, often, patients can literally remain alive for years, regardless of serious illness or injury. But, in that case life is being sustained artificially.

My own testimony: In 2015, my wife Ruth suffered a major stroke. Finally, the physicians declared, “There is nothing more we can do.” Our four sons held a meeting. One physician, with some hesitation, recommended certain medications. But to administer those, she had to be fed by a tube. After watching her for about four days without response, I ordered that the tube be removed. A few days later, in the hospice facility, she went home to be with the Lord. Our family was comforted with the words, “the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21b).
