QATAR - Eight Indian Spies Sentenced to Death

A Qatari court handed down death sentences to eight Indian employees of a Qatari company on charges of espionage, reportedly on behalf of Israel.

The sentences came at a sensitive time amid the Israel-Hamas war, as Qatar has been playing a key intermediary role in negotiating the release of several Israeli hostages held in Gaza by the Palestinian terror group, as well as the entrance of some humanitarian aid for Gaza’s civilian population.

India’s External Affairs Ministry said in a statement it was awaiting the detailed judgment in the case.

“We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options,” it said. “We attach high importance to this case and have been following it closely. We will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also take up the verdict with Qatari authorities.”

A senior Israeli government official voiced rare praise for the Gulf nation that has long hosted Hamas’s top leaders and funded the terror group, commending it for its “crucial” diplomatic efforts., 26 October 2023

Arno's Commentary

The report did not provide sufficient details as to the legitimacy of the charges of being spies for Irael, but we notice that something is in the works: Qatar, which has often expressed extreme anti-Israel views and does not recognize the State of Israel, is an outspoken supporter of Hamas. To what extent these charges are legitimate or trumped up is still unknown, since Qatar’s government has declined to comment on the sentences.

While Qatar was one of the first nations on the Arabian Peninsula to establish trade relations with the State of Israel in 1996, there is no diplomatic relationship between these nations. With a population of 2.5 million inhabitants, Qatar is one of the super-rich nations of the world. The CIA Factbook lists per capita GDP at $99,100.

While 65% are listed as Muslim, with 15.9% Hindu, a rather large percentage—13.7%—list their religion as Christian.

In this case, foreigners (Indians) are accused of spying for the Jewish State. In recent years, we have witnessed such charges against Jews in Iran, and also in Iraq.

In the ongoing Gaza war, Qatar plays a significant part, strongly supporting the Hamas movement.

Interestingly, despite the war, more Jews in the Diaspora are contemplating moving to Israel.
