Russia’s Health Ministry plans a mass vaccination campaign against the coronavirus for October, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told reporters.

“We plan wider [vaccination] for October because we need to launch a new system of treatment gradually,” he said in response to a TASS question.

Murashko pointed out earlier that clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine developed by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology were over.

The vaccination against the novel coronavirus to be free of charge, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told reporters.

To date, 845,443 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 646,524 patients having recovered from the disease. Russia’s latest data indicates 14,058 fatalities nationwide. Earlier, the Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation., 1 August 2020

Arno's commentary

Russia’s coronavirus deaths per million in population stand at 10.01, according to Johns Hopkins University. That is quite an excellent achievement, which some speculate is primarily due to population distribution, when compared to European countries. Russia is the largest country in the world, with only 142 million in population. However, life expectancy is rather low: 71.9 years.

Will Russia’s vaccination plan be successful? Only time will tell. But the world is unified in one common goal: finding an effective coronavirus vaccine.
