RUSSIA - War Making Jews Leave for Israel

Arno Froese

Russia’s policies and its war with Ukraine encourage more Russian Jews to make aliyah than the Jewish Agency’s efforts, Moscow’s former chief rabbi and the current President of the Conference for European Rabbis (CER) Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said in response to Russia’s decision to close down the activities of the Jewish Agency in Russia.

“What the Jewish Agency failed to do in the area of encouraging the aliyah of members of the Jewish community, the Russian government succeeded in doing in the policy it dictated during the war in Ukraine,” Goldschmidt said in a statement on behalf of the CER. “If Russia wants to stop the brain drain and the fleeing of its finest citizens abroad, there is a very simple way to do it: Stop the war immediately.”

Goldschmidt left Russia in March, two weeks after the outbreak of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His daughter-in-law, the journalist Avital Chizhik-Goldschmidt, said recently that Goldschmidt had been pressured to support the war publicly but had declined to do so., 25 July 2022

Arno's Commentary

Here we see another angle of the Russia/Ukraine war; namely, the progressive fulfillment of the prophetic Word. It was the prophet Jeremiah who wrote: “Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks” (Jeremiah 16:16). Israel is the homeland of the Jews, and that is the destiny of Jews the world over.

In this case, we should also read the preceding verse: “But, The Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.” Geographically speaking, the north country is Russia.

Incidentally, this also paints a picture of the Church of Jesus Christ globally. We, the born-again believers, reside in all countries on planet earth—on all five continents. We are very diverse in language, culture, tradition, and custom, yet we are perfectly one in Him, who loved us and gave Himself for us, redeeming us from this evil world.
