SPAIN - Refugees Greeted with Christian Songs

Arno Froese

It’s not just economic refugees who are coming from North Africa to seek a new home in Europe. There are also Christians among the African refugees who risk the dangerous crossing over the Mediterranean, to flee the Islamic terror group Boko Haram, for example. Consequently, recently, Christians from Nigeria managed to come to Spain on a refugee ship carrying 630 migrants from 32 countries. When the refugee ship docked in Valencia, all the refugees were greeted with Christian songs. Full of joy and gratitude, the Christian refugees sang along with local Spanish Christians and praised God. Even some Muslim refugees were infected by the Christians’ joy and just sang along.

Arno's commentary

This article is refreshing. Instead of refugees being locked up—often extremely mistreated, some even killed—the Christians here received the foreigners, the refugees, the rejected, with a joyful Christian song. This reminds us of the inscription on a plaque mounted on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” That is the true testimony of the true Church. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand” (Philippians 4:4-5).
