SPAIN - Twelve New Churches Open Every Month

Arno Froese

Spain’s Roman Catholic Church is losing its members in great numbers. In 2006, 77% of the citizens claimed to be Catholic; at the end of last year, only 69% did so. This is the finding of the latest “report on religious pluralism” from the Spanish government. However, evangelically-inclined churches are on the rise. They are currently the fastest growing religious group in the country. According to statistics, there are currently 3,910 evangelical churches. In 2016 alone, 141 new ones were added. By comparison, Muslims currently have 1,508 registered places of worship, followed by Jehovah’s Witnesses (650), Orthodox (197), Buddhists (155), Mormons (119), Baha’i and Jews (36).

Arno's commentary

Here again we see the Church growing in the midst of many other confusing religions. We see God the Holy Spirit at work, and that globally. The Church will be built and will be completed, and at that moment the Lord will take His Church into His presence. “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).
