SUDAN - Resumes Diplomatic Relations with Iran

Arno Froese

Sudan and Iran have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations seven years after ties were severed.

Khartoum cut ties with Tehran in 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi Arabian embassy in Iran. The oil-rich kingdom had executed a prominent Shiite cleric with 46 others days earlier, triggering demonstrations and severing Saudi-Iranian relations.

At the time, Sudan was a close ally of Saudi Arabia and had deployed troops to fight in the Saudi coalition against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in neighboring Yemen.

The rapprochement comes seven months after regional foes Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and reopen embassies in a deal brokered by China.

Arno's Commentary

Interestingly, it is China brokering diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran; now it is Sudan reestablishing ties with Tehran.

Though this may not be unusual in the geopolitical world, we take notice that Sudan signed an agreement for normalization with Israel on 23 October 2020.

While there are several hotspots to be ironed out, one cannot deny that slowly but surely, various nations that were at war with each other in the past, are now seeking normalization.

As Christians, we do well to realize that in the grand scheme of things, the world will and must increasingly unite to follow the god of this world, who desperately tries to create a peaceful, prosperous, and secure global order.  When reading the prophet Isaiah, particularly chapter 40, we notice the simplified summary of the nations: “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing” (Isaiah 40:15). Never at the slightest moment must we think that the Lord—the Creator of heaven and earth—is at a loss when it comes to the nations of the world. Verse 28 declares: “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”
