SWEDEN - Defense Deal with USA

Arno Froese

On the brink of joining NATO, Sweden has signed a defense cooperation agreement with Washington that will allow the United States access to all of the military bases across the Scandinavian country, saying the deal would bolster regional security.

Sweden’s strategically important Baltic Sea island of Gotland sits a little more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the Russian Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad.

Sweden and its neighbor Finland decided to drop their long-standing policy of non-alignment and apply for NATO membership following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year. Finland joined NATO in April.

New members must be approved by all existing members of the alliance. Turkey and Hungary are the only NATO countries that have not formally approved Sweden’s accession bid.

Turkey has delayed ratification for more than a year, accusing Sweden of not taking Turkey’s security concerns seriously enough, including its fight against Kurdish militants and other groups that Ankara considers to be security threats.

Arno's Commentary

Here we see the alignment of powerful nation groups, popularly called “the West,” in opposition to “the East.” Sweden, with a population of only 10.5 million people, is counted among the super-successful nations of the world. It is on level with Switzerland, which has been a neutral country; actually, Switzerland has the oldest military policy of neutrality in world. While Sweden is known for its neutrality, it joined the European Union in 1995. It did not join the European Monetary Union, and as expected, has seen its currency lose value, albeit to a small degree. Sweden is highly respected as a technologically advanced country. For example, the Volvo Group prides itself as the second largest heavy truck manufacturer in the world after Mercedes. Quite an achievement for a 10.5 million inhabitant country!

What does it mean for Sweden to join NATO? As the article states, “to bolster regional security.” Interest in security has risen greatly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Even the somewhat pacifist country of Germany has increased its defense budget significantly.

Many ask, is this an indication of possible war between the East and the West? While no one can predict war, which comes unexpectedly, we believe that based on the prophetic Word, more and larger power blocs will be created; for example, BRICS, whose members include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. A number of additional nations have applied for membership to BRICS. This process is needed to unify the nations of the world even more.

Russia has demonstrated its military failure by not being able to occupy the country of Ukraine and install a pro-Russian government. When that war is over, new rules and regulations will be implemented, and that in line with internationalism. Yet in the end, it’s all the same: the nations of the earth—under the spirit of the god of this world—desperately attempt to create a unified world, to prove mankind’s ability to bring peace to planet earth outside of the Prince of Peace. “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
