TUNISIA - First Arab Country to Recognize Gay Marriage

Arno Froese

President of the Tunisian LGBTQ organization Shams, Mounir Baatour, who favors diplomatic relations with Israel, issued a series of tweets about the groundbreaking marriage. He wrote: “While homosexuality is still punished with prison in Tunisia, and several gay people are currently in Tunisian prisons, a gay marriage has just been included in the birth certificate of a Tunisian.”

In March, The Jerusalem Post reported that Shams announced that a court recognized its legal status in response to efforts by the Muslim-majority state to close the group.

Commenting, LGBTQ and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told The Jerusalem Post: “This recognition of a gay marriage is a milestone in the Arab world.

“But it is indirect recognition and not the legalization of marriage between same-sex couples. Even if it is appealed or overturned, this is a breakthrough that will give hope to LGBT+ people in Tunisia and across North Africa and the Middle East.”

Arno's Commentary

The Bible has this to say: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination” (Leviticus 18:22). In the New Testament, Romans 1:27 reads: “And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” Throughout history, these types of relations were abhorred and often punishable by law. That is now changing, under the guise of equal rights, equal protection, and now equal marriage.

In the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, righteous Lot warned them, “…I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly” (Genesis 19:7). The Sodomites answered: “…Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door” (verse 9). Worse yet, even after judgment, they did not give up, as documented in verse 11.

Muslims follow the teaching of the Koran, a mixture of the Old and New Testament, with numerous contradictions. Yet they also reject same-sex marriage. We are approaching the end stages of the end times, and Jesus’ prophecy must be fulfilled: “But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” (Luke 17:29-30).
