President Tayyip Erdogan said he was targeting membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for NATO-member Turkey, broadcaster NTV and other media said.

“Our relations with these countries will be moved to a much different position with this step,” Erdogan said.

Turkey is currently a dialogue partner of the SCO, whose members are China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Amid bilateral discussions at the summit, Erdogan had talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Erdogan said Turkey and Russia had reached a deal resolving a dispute over a nuclear power plant being built at Akkuyu in southern Turkey.

Arno's Commentary

Turkey’s geography is important. It is bordered in the west by Greece and Bulgaria; to the north by the Black Sea; in the east by Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran; and to the south, it’s Syria and Iraq. The country has about the same population as Germany, 83 million plus, and is listed as 99.8% Sunni Muslim. Life expectancy stands at 76.2 years. The GDP per capita was listed as $28,400 for 2020. The largest import and export partner is Germany, with 9% of total exports and 11% imports. The Turkish lira (TRY) was listed in April 2022 at 14.60 to the dollar; in October it slipped to 18.56. Thus, not surprisingly, Turkey looks to the east. Most international economic and financial experts agree that the future lies in the east, with communist China becoming the world leader.

To make friends with more countries is the goal of every nation; the more the better. Internationalism is a sure-footed platform to rise toward more freedom, prosperity, and security.

It is of interest that Turkey is the country of the seven churches John was instructed to write to. IstanbulTurkeyTravel.com has this to say about the seven churches: “The Seven Churches of Revelation are ancient churches that St John wrote about in the Bible. Each church received a letter calling them to repent for their sins and correct their current course. When the letters to the churches were sent, there were active Christian communities in each of the towns. Today, though some remnants of these ancient cities and their churches remain, others have merged with the modern Turkish cities that now dot the landscape.” These seven churches had a physical location, and their ruins are shown to Christian groups by tour guides.

This simply confirms that no physical church on earth—no matter how large or small, how imposing or how primitive—has any future on earth. The real Church is the living, vibrant, Spirit-filled group of believers. They continue to this day on all continents and in all countries on planet earth.

When will the Church have fulfilled its task? Paul gives us the answer in Romans 11:25-26: “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” Interestingly, Israel’s collective salvation depends on the fullness of the Gentiles and the grace of the Deliverer: “turn away ungodliness from Jacob.”
