TURKEY - Total Trade Embargo on Israel

Arno Froese

A Turkish Trade Ministry statement said “export and import transactions in relation to Israel have been stopped, covering all products.”

The ministry described the step as the “second phase” of measures against Israel, adding that the steps would remain in force until Israel “allows an uninterrupted and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

Turkey recognized Israel in 1949. Under Erdogan, tensions have ebbed and flowed between the countries. The Turkish leader stepped up his criticism of Israel following its military offensive in Gaza, accusing it of carrying out war crimes and genocide. He has described the Hamas militant group, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, as freedom fighters.

Arno's Commentary

There is an old saying: If you want to beat a dog, you will find a stick. The issue here is sufficient, uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Times of Israel reports:

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the IDF unit responsible for liaising with the Palestinians, said that 468 aid trucks had been inspected and transferred into Gaza, including 47 to the Strip’s battered north, which aid groups have said is especially difficult to reach.

The overall number of trucks, COGAT said, was the highest since the war began, surpassing the previous day’s high of 419. More than 1,200 aid trucks were inspected by Israeli authorities and entered Gaza.

Another report by AIPAC reads:

The United Nations and other international agencies are largely responsible for the existing delays in aid deliveries into Gaza. The U.N. has not been able to distribute aid at the rate that Israel is processing it, causing back-ups at the border crossings after Israeli inspections are completed.

Since the start of the war, Israel has denied entry to only 1.6% of trucks seeking to enter Gaza. The main obstacle to humanitarian aid reaching civilians is the distribution mechanism inside of Gaza. Truck drivers are also delaying distribution by arriving late to Rafah and leaving early.

Israel is acting according to Proverbs 25:21-22: “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.” Matthew 5:44 states, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”
