UK - AI Inventions Cannot Be Patented

Arno Froese

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that an artificial intelligence system can’t be registered as the inventor of a patent, denying machines the same status as humans.

The decision was the culmination of American technologist Stephen Thaler’s long-running British legal battle to get his AI, dubbed DABUS, listed as the inventor of two patents.

Thaler claims DABUS autonomously created a food and drink container and a light beacon and that he’s entitled to rights over its inventions. Tribunals in the U.S. and the European Union have rejected similar applications by Thaler.

“As AI systems continue to advance in sophistication and capability, there is no denying their ability to generate new and non-obvious products and processes with minimal, or perhaps even without any, ongoing human input,” said Nick White, a partner at law firm Charles Russell Speechlys.

“Change may be on the horizon, but it will most likely come from the policymakers, rather than the judges,” he said., 20 December 2023

Arno's Commentary

What was unthinkable and categorized as science fiction just one century ago, is now approaching the level of possibility. Scientist Neil Gershenfeld makes this statement in his book, When Things Start to Think, copyright 1999, on page 133: “The architecture of a computer becomes a kind of digital deity that brings order to the rest of the world.”

Indeed, mankind will in the end, produce a manufactured deity, although fake. We learn this from Israel’s Biblical history: repeatedly, they turned from the living God to worship idols—manmade products. The Psalmist proclaims: “The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them” (Psalm 135:15-18).

Today’s idol—radio, television, internet, etc.—actually can talk. We just experienced this when visitors from Midnight Call International, headquartered in Switzerland, showed a video of our coworker Fredy Peter fluently speaking Arabic, although he was actually recorded speaking in German. Thus, we see that things that were deemed impossible are now in the realm of possibility. Mankind will produce its own god, and it will be demonstrated to the entire world in the person of Antichrist. Second Thessalonians 2:4 declares: “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.”
