UK - Defense Ministry Acquires First Quantum Computer

Arno Froese

Quantum computers can make very complex calculations extremely quickly and their creators say they can solve the problems regular computers cannot.

The MoD will work with British company Orca Computing to explore applications for quantum technology in defense.

The computers found in most of our homes and workplaces process data in bits, which have a binary value of either zero or one.

Quantum computers instead use a two-state unit for data processing called a qubit.

This can represent digits like one or zero simultaneously through a quantum mechanical process called superposition, letting quantum computers bridge binary digits and cope with uncertainty where regular computers cannot.

The promise of quantum computing is that it will help to solve problems that standard computers can’t handle.

The idea is that it will be used in the fight against climate change, in the development of new drugs and improved artificial intelligence—and in this case, potentially to support the military., 9 June 2022

Arno's Commentary

We notice the word “defense.” Doing research, one finds out that this is a relatively new definition; it always used to be “department of war” or “war department.” Now it’s called defense. Strange: no one is attacking.

In the United States, the War Department was replaced by the Department of Defense in 1949. In the UK, the Ministry of Defense was created on 1 April 1964.

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, war has become an important event for the news media globally. Even somewhat pacifist Germany has ordered a total overhaul of their war machine (defense).

We are reminded of Joel 3:9-10: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.”

What is the background reason for the world’s commotion? We don’t think it’s just Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; verse 2 reads: “I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.” Thus, we realize that something is going on in the invisible world. It’s all about Israel, because the nations have “parted [God’s] land.”
