UK - ‘Human-Level’ Artificial Intelligence

Arno Froese

DeepMind, a British company owned by Google, may be on the verge of achieving human-level artificial intelligence (AI).

Nando de Freitas, a research scientist at DeepMind and machine learning professor at Oxford University, has said ‘the game is over’ in regards to solving the hardest challenges in the race to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI).

AGI refers to a machine or program that has the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can, and do so without training.

Some commentators think we are decades away from realizing AGI, and some even doubt we will see AGI in this century.

AGI has been already identified as a future threat that could wipe out humanity either deliberately or by accident.

De Freitas tweeted: ‘It’s all about scale now! The Game is Over! It’s about making these models bigger, safer, compute efficient, faster...’

However, he admitted that humanity is still far from creating an AI that can pass the Turing test—a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to or indistinguishable from that of a human.

Arno's Commentary

Trying to understand modern computing makes one realize it is something virtually miraculous. We cannot begin to enumerate the contributions computer science has made relating to our everyday life.

Here, the issue is artificial general intelligence (AGI). The goal of these scientists is clearly revealed: to achieve a nearly human level of intelligence.

Quite interestingly, the article warns that AGI “could wipe out humanity either deliberately or by accident.”

We know from Scripture that there will be a manmade contraption called “the image of the beast.” Revelation 13:15 actually reads, “he had power to give life unto the image of the beast.” We know that only God can give life. Here the great imitator is at work. Young’s Literal Translation reads, “and there was given to it to give a spirit to the image of the beast.”

This image of the beast is an idol with the capacity to apparently read the minds of people. The Bible continues, “that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.”

Looks like that’s in the works now.
