UN - Condemns Israeli ‘Occupation’ of Golan

The United Nations Human Rights Council is set to condemn Israel’s “occupation” of the Golan Heights in Geneva as it wraps up its month-long 40th session.

The resolution was submitted by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. It recalled UN Security Council Resolution 497 from 1981, which rejected Israel’s annexation of the Golan.

Israel’s decision “to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan was null and void and without international legal effect,” and the 1981 resolution “demanded that Israel rescind forthwith its decision,” the new resolution states.

It is one of five anti-Israel resolutions the UNHRC is set to debate on and will vote on.

The council annually condemns Israel’s annexation of the Golan, which it captured from Syria in 1967 during the Six Day War.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham visited the Golan with Netanyahu and vowed to push the Trump administration to recognize it as part of sovereign Israel.

The US State Department stopped calling the Golan “occupied” territory and instead referred to it as Israeli “controlled.”

“To support Israel’s right to self-defense, both houses of Congress should take up our legislation establishing that it shall be the policy of the United States to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan,” said senators Cruz, Cotton and Gallagher.

The Palestinian Authority has opposed the elimination of the word “occupation” in the report, which similarly no longer refers to the West Bank and Gaza as occupied. Israel has not annexed the West Bank, which has been under its military control since 1967. It withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

Arno's commentary

Here is what we read in Deuteronomy 4:43: “Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.” And Joshua 20:8 confirms: “And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Syria was subject to the dictates of France, as border lines were drawn by the Franco-British Boundary Agreement in December of 1920. From that perspective, there is no such thing as “ancient Syrian territory.” Besides, over and again, Syria attacked Israel, and each time they were defeated. Thus, it stands to reason that Israel needs the Golan Heights for protection.

In the meantime, US President Donald Trump has officially recognized the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, and that under severe protest from most nations in the world.

We repeat: national and international boundaries were established by weapons of war. For example: this writer, born in East Prussia, lost his ancient homeland when the Soviet Union defeated Nazi Germany and divided East Prussia between Lithuania, Russia, and Poland. That’s settled; it’s over, forgotten.

While some may reject Biblical statements, no one can deny the validity of the age-old historical law: to the conqueror belongs the spoils. Not so when it comes to Israel. The nations of the world will continue to challenge Israel’s right to the Promised Land, but in the end Israel will be victorious. It is the Creator of heaven and earth who has set the boundaries of the land of Israel, from the river of Egypt to the river of Euphrates. Thus, we see there is much Arab-occupied Israeli territory that needs to be liberated.
