UN - Israel Must Reveal Nuclear Weapons

Arno Froese

Israel must dispose of all its nuclear weapons and place its nuclear sites under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s purview, the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee stated in an initial 152-5 vote.

The resolution largely targets Israel, which is believed to be one of only nine nations to possess nuclear weapons. Israel has never admitted to having such weapons.

The resolution notes that Israel is the only country in the Middle East and one of the few among the UN’s 193 member states, which has not signed the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT).

Iran, which is a signatory to the treaty, is believed to be on the path to developing nuclear weapons. Despite this, the resolution did not mention Iran.

The First Committee also approved with 170 votes—including Iran—a call for a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East. Israel was the only country that opposed the text. Four countries abstained: the United States, Cameron, Comoros and Tanzania.

In a debate on the matter earlier, an Israeli deputy ambassador to the UN Michal Maayan said the NPT is only as relevant as the level of compliance and is not a remedy for the “unique security challenges” of the Middle East.

“For decades now, Iran has been rapidly advancing its illicit nuclear programs and currently possesses large quantities of highly enriched nuclear material,” Maayan charged.

Israeli ambassador Michal Maayan explained it’s impossible to speak of a regional security architecture around the nuclear issue in a situation where Middle East countries do not recognize Israel’s right to exist.

Arno's Commentary

Israel’s nuclear capability is a state secret and not to be revealed. Some insist that Israel is in possession of nuclear weapons, while others theorize that the non-existent nuclear weapons are a deterrence to Israel’s enemies.

The problem is obvious: the majority of Arab and Islamic nations do not recognize Israel’s geopolitical existence. That is an advantage for Israel; you can’t force a non-existent nation to comply with resolutions tabled by countries denying Israel’s existence.

Quoting Joel 3:2 is appropriate: “I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.”
