USA - Can AI Predict Earthquakes?

Arno Froese

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week before they happened during a seven-month trial in China.

In a weekly forecast, the researchers’ AI predicted 14 earthquakes within 200 miles of where it estimated they would occur and at almost exactly the predicted strength. The AI missed one earthquake and gave eight false warnings.

“Predicting earthquakes is the holy grail,” said Sergey Fomel, a member of the research team and professor at the university’s Bureau of Economic Geology. “We’re not yet close to making predictions for anywhere in the world, but what we achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable in principle.”

In 2022, Israel launched its own early warning system for earthquakes, called TRUAA, which is connected to Israel’s Home Front Command alarm system.

“An earthquake of significant magnitude in Israel is not a question of ‘if’ but of ‘when,’” said Dr. Ariel Heimann, a geologist and senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies. “The next earthquake could be 10 minutes [or] 10, 20, or 50 years away.”

Arno's Commentary

The word “earthquake” appears 16 times in our Bible, and the plural form “earthquakes” three times. We notice that Jesus in His end-time prophetic speech, mentions the plural form. “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places” (Matthew 24:6-7). Jesus does not say earthquakes, pestilences, famines, and wars shall increase in the end times, but simply states something that has happened and keeps occurring since the fall of mankind. Thus, wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes will continue. That is part of the day-to-day occurrences on planet earth.

When reading the article in full, one quickly notices that these scientists—even with the help of artificial intelligence—are unable to predict the next earthquake anywhere on earth. Dr. Ariel Heimann openly admits: “The next earthquake could be 10 minutes [or] 10, 20, or 50 years away.”

To us believers, it means to note what is written in verse 44: “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
