USA - Chick-fil-A Open Sunday?

Arno Froese

The New York State Assembly has put forth a new bill, known as the Rest Stop Restaurant Act, that would require food and beverage companies contracted to provide services along the Thruway and at the Port Authority in New York and New Jersey to stay open seven days a week.

Applegreen, an Irish convenience store chain with a portfolio of companies including Chick-fil-A, took over the leases of all Thruway Authority service areas in 2021. To date, Chick-fil-A has opened at seven Thruway service areas. The fast-food chain currently operates 2,988 restaurants across 48 states.

“While there is nothing objectionable about a fast food restaurant closing on a particular day of the week, service areas dedicated to travelers [are] an inappropriate location for such a restaurant,” the bill states, in part. “Publicly owned service areas should use their space to maximally benefit the public. Allowing for retail space to go unused one seventh of the week or more is a disservice and unnecessary inconvenience to travelers who rely on these service areas.”

The only exception from the seven-day-a-week operations mandate in the new legislation is for “temporary concessions such as farmers markets or local vendors.”

Arno's Commentary

Not so long ago, virtually all stores were closed on Sunday. But, as time went by, more and more stores opened to sell their merchandise. Alcoholic beverages being sold on Sunday was once out of the question, but the power of commercialism seems to be the winner in the long run. When reading Revelation 18, it becomes clear that merchandise is king.

A Google search for Europe reveals a ChatGPT summary: “Many countries in Europe have a tradition of closing businesses and shops on Sundays due to historical and cultural reasons. This practice often has roots in religious traditions, particularly in Christian-majority countries, where Sunday is considered a day of rest and worship.” Interesting that it states, “…a day of rest and worship.” However, average European church attendance lies below 15% of the population, in contrast to the USA’s 53%. Will Chick-fil-A be forced to abide by the bill set forth by the New York State Assembly? Time will tell.

Here again, we see the day of rest is virtually ignored by modern society.

Although addressed to the children of Israel, whom the Lord brought out with a mighty hand from house of bondage in Egypt, “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates” (Exodus 20:9-10). This is still a principle for humanity, but in the end, that must also be erased (and is well on its way).

What about Israel? Those who have traveled to the country know that on Friday evening, before the sun goes down, most shops close, and obtaining transportation is difficult.
