WORLD - 6-Way Tie for Most Powerful Passport

J. Froese

There is such a thing as a passport power ranking. And, spoiler alert, a U.S. passport isn’t at the top.

Citizens in six countries are now considered to have the world’s most powerful passports: Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to the 2024 Henley Passport Index.

With access to 193 destinations, South Korea, Sweden and Finland are closely behind. Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands tied for the third spot with visa-free travel to 192 destinations.

U.S. citizens have the 7th most powerful passport, being able to visit 188 destinations without a visa. In 2014, the U.S, held the top spot with the United Kingdom.

For those who aren’t citizens of these countries, the good news is that over the past two decades, the general trend of the index has been greater travel freedom.

“The average number of destinations travelers are able to access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024,” Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and the inventor of the passport index concept, said in a press release., 12 January 2024

For decades, we have been following the trend of an ever-increasing volume of international travel. The drop due to Covid-19 now seems a distant memory as airlines, cruise ships, and nearly every other sector of the travel and hospitality industry is booming. In fact, there are an increasing number of stories about shortages in capacity—namely aircraft, gate slots, and staff, for instance.

What caught our eye in this story was the fact “that over the past two decades, the general trend of the index has been greater travel freedom.” Anyone who has had to go through the hassle of applying for a visa to travel to a particular country, understands how important visa-free travel is, and how, unsurprisingly, it boosts international travel. These trends naturally bring Daniel 12:4 to mind: “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” -By J.
