WORLD - Christian Persecution Rising

Arno Froese

Persecution of Christians has worsened in at least 18 countries at the hands of both totalitarian governments and militant non-state actors in recent years, according to a new report.

Released by Catholic group Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) on Nov. 16 and presented to the U.K. Parliament, the report pinpointed Asia, Africa and the Middle East as the regions where the persecution of Christians is most grave.

Nigeria in particular teeters on the brink of becoming a “failed state” because of jihadists, the report warned, explaining that one analysis tallied as many as 7,600 Christians killed in the country between January 2021 and June 2022.

In his forward to the report, Father Andrew Adeniyi Abayomi, whose church in Nigeria was attacked by gunmen on Pentecost, wrote: “The suffering Church needs people to speak out for us. For the killing to stop, more organizations like ACN need to proclaim the truth of what is happening to Christians all over the world. If not, we will always remain persecuted and forgotten.”

The “world’s oldest and most important Christian communities located in Iraq, Syria, and Palestine” are also particularly endangered, the report continued, noting that the Christian population in Syria has plunged from 1.5 million to only 300,000 since 2011., 21 November 2022

Arno's Commentary

Gathering from various other sources, it is noted that when the Christian religion exhibits power, they are potential candidates for vicious opposition and, as reported by many, outright persecution. The Catholic Church in particular is a visible target for fanatics, primarily jihadists.

Hebrew 13:3 admonishes the believer: “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.” Remember means to pray for these brethren, so as to participate in their suffering. We pray for comfort, strength, longsuffering, and patience. Here is the testimony of the apostle Paul: “By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things” (2 Corinthians 6:6-10).
