Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written” (Exodus 32:32).

Moses’ face shone because, among other things, he had spoken with the Lord. What did Moses say to the Lord? He had reason enough to lament how weak he was and how much he needed the power and help of the Lord for his task. But we do not hear anything of this. His prayer was not about himself. On the contrary, he was prepared to be blotted out of the Lord’s book. As the mediator of the people, he is a pointer to our great Mediator, Jesus Christ. Moses had been redeemed from the circle of influence of his own interests and his own life. He was only zealous where the glory of the Lord was concerned, which was infinitely more important than anything else. But much more than this, Moses reflected the glory of God because the Lord had spoken to him. He showed him the way through the blood of the substitute, the way that leads the sinner to the heart of God. God revealed to him the sacrifice and the priest. Not in vain does the Lord speak so much of this, for from eternity God the Father planned in His immeasurably great love salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. He was sacrifice and priest simultaneously. We perceive here something of the longing of the Lord to impart to man this wonderful mystery of redemption, which the angels longed to see (1 Peter 1:12).
