Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

This admonition says that we should be sober and vigilant, even while we continually claim the victory of Jesus. Paul says the same thing in Ephesians 6:10-11. He does not say that we have to fight against the cunning attacks of the devil, but rather that we must become strong in the Lord! Are we denying the fight of faith? No, but we are not fighting toward the victory of Jesus, but from the accomplished victory of Jesus. Somebody may protest, if Satan really is conquered, how can he still be active?

Because the victory of the Lord Jesus must be proved before the visible and invisible world through those who believe in Jesus Christ.

Because man can only be saved on the grounds of his free-will decision. He must choose between Jesus and Satan, between light and darkness, between life and death.

Because the sovereign, holy God does not need to suppress the darkness by force. God’s presence in itself and the gift of His love, Jesus Christ, who as the light of the world reconciled the world with God, tore the power from Satan.
