Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

Does the Church have to endure the same sufferings as the Lord Jesus? We are told in the Bible repeatedly that we:
• have to go the same way as the Lamb (Revelation 14:4),
• should follow in His footsteps (1 Peter 2:21),
• are destined to be partakers of His sufferings (1 Peter 4:13),
• are even conformed to His death in the fellowship of Jesus’ sufferings (Philippians 3:10), and
• are not only conformed to His death but are planted with Christ in the same death (Romans 6:5).

We have to suffer persecution because, as born-again Christians, we are one body with Him. He is the Head, and we are the members of His body. It is not that we have to carry away the sins of the world, however. He did this once and for all. Also, we are not asked to bear His cross, which we would never be able to do anyway. We are not required to bear His cross, but our own. This willingness to bear my cross is part of my discipleship and leads to me being like Him in glory. This is God’s great goal for each of us.
