Does the handwriting on the wall in Daniel chapter 5 have any prophetic significance for the endtimes?
Daniel 5 is a great prophetic chapter. Belshazzar represents the nations of the world who live at ease. They are having a party, celebrating their successes. Of particular importance is their religious activity that climaxes with the mixing of the holy with the unholy: “Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem...They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone” (Daniel 5:3-4). This should remind us of Revelation 9:20: “...yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood....”
The handwriting on the wall represents Israel. The founding of the state in May 1948 moved the world and continues to grab more headlines than any other country of size.
The event concludes with the infamous interpretation of the words, “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin” (Daniel 5:25), explained in verse 27: “...Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” Despite their success in their own right, the nations will be “found wanting.”
